Depression in Women

In fact, women are twice as likely to develop clinical depression as men. Mostly due to the hormonal fluctuations women experiences considerable mood swings which are commonly termed as PMS (Pre menstrual Syndrome). PMS is a collection of emotional and biological symptoms associated with menstrual cycle. When the estrogen and progesterone level rapidly fall as per the changes in menstrual cycle, lead to lower level of serotonin production. This in turn lead to emotional disturbances. If not dealt properly, PMS can lead to Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. This is a severe stage. Although before adolescence, depression is rare and occurs at about the same rate in girls and boys. But with the start of puberty, a girl's risk of having depression increases dramatically to twice that of boys.
